The whole way, he cursed about his ruined outfit. First time I
wore this, too. Disgusting barbarian. I have a score to settle with
whoever released him from that tomb.
His attitude stunned her. You were slashed with a knife and
you re worried about your clothes? You could have been killed!
With that puny dagger? The blade wasn t even sharp. Caine
grinned. What good is immortality if you can t use it to intimidate
your enemies& or impress your dates?
Lindsay had no answer. She glanced at the elevators. Neither
Caine nor Gabriel had pushed the button to summon one.
Um& where are we going? Up to the room for more sex? She
hoped so, though she couldn t quite bring herself to voice her desire.
Actually, I think we ought to make our exit. I m tired of this
place, though it s served its purpose. We own a house about an hour
from here. Or should I say, Gabriel owns it. He allows me to stay as
his guest now and again.

Lindsay stared, trying not to let her surprise and disappointment
show. Of course she d known her interlude with them couldn t go on
forever. She d planned to return to Boston after a night or two, with a
notebook full of observations she could start translating into the
requisitely dry academic prose. Physical pleasure had never factored
into the equation, much less a continuing liaison with her research
subjects.
And yet& against all logic, not to mention her better judgment,
she didn t want her time with them to end.
After an agonizing moment, Caine added, You re welcome to
come with us. I don t think Gabriel would object.
Certainly not, Gabriel said. Consider yourself invited.
Lindsay exhaled heavily. Did she dare to do this? Such rash
behavior went against everything she was or had ever been.
 I m& I m not sure.
Caine scoffed. You have exactly fifteen minutes to decide. By
then we ll need to be on the road if we re to get home before sunup.
He walked away without inviting them to follow.
You will come with us? Gabriel prodded. I promise to make
you comfortable and safe. And you ll be free to leave at any
time& though I hope you won t.
As she always did when faced with a dilemma, she decided to
focus on practical matters first. Uh& Where would I check out? she
asked.
Don t worry, Gabriel reassured her. Caine s had a standing
account here for years. He ll take care of everything. He ll have your
things packed up and brought to your car, too.
Oh. Lindsay felt a little foolish when she realized she d
forgotten about her car. She felt a little more secure knowing she
would have some means of transportation at their house. That way,
she could take off if things got uncomfortable& assuming Gabriel was
telling the truth about letting her go.

She swallowed. If she said no, these two men would fade from her
life forever. Was she reckless to place that concern above her own
safety?
Hadn t that always been her problem, though an inability to
open herself up to possibilities, to let the good slip away with the bad?
A judgmental voice echoed deep in her memory. That s what s wrong
with you, Lindsay. You won t take chances. You re boring. And,
frankly, you bore me. Good-bye.
Yes. She met his expectant gaze with a confidence she forced
herself to feel. I ll come with you.
 You re sure?
 I m sure.
Gabriel s face relaxed into a smile that made her insides clench
with desire. All right, then. He took out a cell phone and spoke
briefly to someone she assumed was Caine. It s a go. See you there.
He snapped the phone shut and looked up at her happily. Caine will
drive your car. You and I will go in mine. Don t worry. He s a good
driver.
She was about to ask why she couldn t take her own vehicle when
a possible explanation dawned on her. Maybe they didn t want her to
be able to find their house on her own once she left.
Assuming they ever allowed her to leave.
It wasn t too late to change her mind. She could walk away now,
make a run for the parking lot, disappear into the night. They would
never find her. She doubted they would even look.
 Gabriel
He slid an arm around her waist and hugged her to him.
I m glad you re coming, he said. We fit together. Don t you
feel the same?
The excuse she was about to make withered on her parted lips.
 Yes, she said. I do.
Gabriel led her back through the lobby and out to the circular
driveway. The same gaunt valet spotted them and shuffled off to find

Gabriel s car. Lindsay stared at him a bit longer this time than she had
when she d first arrived. Given everything she d seen in the club, his [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
