* * * * Sidney swung back and forth on the double-wide hammock and watched Luke and Josh throw a football back and forth between them. I think we should go to Manhattan tomorrow, Josh said. Why? Sidney asked, tucking the blanket around his feet. Evidently someone had forgotten to inform Philadelphia it was spring. SPRING Carol Lynne 65 Because I m bored, and it ll give you a chance to take a billion pictures. Why don t you come with us, Luke? No way I m driving, Sidney added before Luke could answer. We usually take the train, Luke informed Sidney. Yeah, I ll go along, but I bet Mom ll make us take Zac. No way. What if we want a beer or something? Zac s only nineteen. Are you planning to go bar hopping? Sidney asked. Because if that s the case, I m out. Josh and Sidney s ideas of fun places to party were completely different. No, but if we decide to stop in somewhere and listen to some music& Josh let the statement hang in the cold West Chester air. What kind of music? Sidney knew he wasn t getting the full story. Okay, fine. You know that girl from my Sociology class that I told you about? Veronica? Sidney had listened to Josh talk non-stop about the buxom redhead since the beginning of the term. Yeah. Anyway, turns out she s in a band and they re playing at a place called Smokey Joe s on Friday night. Anyway, I thought if we went up for the day, we could stop in and listen for a few minutes, Josh explained. Sidney glanced at Luke. Josh s older brother was staring straight at him. Evidently it was Sidney s decision whether to go or not. As much as he hated the thought of hanging out at a straight club all evening, Sidney couldn t bring himself to say no. Fine. Cool. Josh tossed the football to Luke. I ll go tell Mom and Dad. As soon as Josh left, Luke chuckled. I take it Veronica s not his usual. Sidney nodded. She hasn t given him the time of day and it s driving him nuts. It s good for him. Life s always been a breeze for Josh. And you? Sidney asked. What s life been like for you? I thought you were Mr Big Man on Campus? Luke sat in one of the chairs close to the hammock. Yeah, well, sports have never been a problem for me. It s everything else. Sidney could tell by the expression on Luke s face he wanted to talk, but didn t know where to begin. Like how to tell your family you re gay? SPRING Carol Lynne 66 For a split second, Luke seemed surprised by the question, but he eventually nodded. Yeah. And not just my family. I have coaches to answer to, teammates& hell, the list goes on and on. Sidney reached out and laid a hand on Luke s knee. I wouldn t worry about your family. Yours was cool? Luke asked, hope in his eyes. Uhh, no, but my dad is nothing like yours. But I still don t regret telling him. I think, for me, it was a test more than anything. A test for what? To see how much he loved me, or whether he even loved me at all, Sidney said, removing his hand. He snuggled under the blanket. And did he pass? Luke asked. Thinking back to the morning of the big fight with his dad, Sidney shook his head. I m still not sure. He told me not to bother coming home again unless I cut my hair and stopped wearing eyeliner. But it looks hot on you. Luke shut himself off and squirmed in his chair. I mean, it s who you are. Sidney warmed at the compliment. It had been a long time since he d felt truly desirable. Sure he d been asked out plenty of times since Winter Break, but he knew all that was required of him was a lubed ass. Not one of the guys who pursued him cared about anything but getting laid. Yeah, well, I m from a small town, so my dad wants me to blend in with the locals, I guess. Blend in? What a depressing thought. Sidney smiled. I agree, which is why I m here in West Chester instead of back on the ranch. Luke leant forward to rest his forearms on his knees. The new position showcased the broad expanse of his chest. Sidney nearly swooned. Luke was almost as big as Nash. Stop it, he mumbled under his breath. Excuse me? Nothing. Once again, Sidney tried to push all thoughts of Nash to the background. Luke stared at Sidney for several moments before standing. I m gonna go grab some lunch. Hungry? SPRING Carol Lynne 67 Sure. Sidney wasn t, but maybe it would help to get his mind off Nash and back onto the handsome man in front of him. * * * * With a big, goofy, drunken grin on his face, Josh waved the napkin with Veronica s phone number on it in front of Sidney s face. I told you it would be worth all the hassle. Sidney knocked Josh s hand away before pulling to the side of the road. He looked into the rear view mirror at Luke. Do me a favour and change places with this drunken idiot before I kill him. Josh might be happy, but Sidney was anything but. Not only had they ended up driving his car to Newark before catching a cab into New York City, but the band Veronica was in was some kind of punk grunge crap. Sidney had a splitting headache, and a drunk waving shit in his face was the last straw. Aw, Sid, don t you love me anymore? Josh said, leaning over the console to kiss Sidney s cheek. I ll love you tomorrow. Tonight I hate your guts. Now get your ass in the backseat. Sidney pushed Josh towards the door Luke held open. Josh started laughing and dived into the back seat through the split in the front bucket seats. Sidney rolled his eyes at Luke once he was buckled in in the front passenger seat. Cut him some slack, Luke said with a grin. He s a happy boy. Haven t you ever been around Josh when he was drunk? Yeah, but I m usually drunk, too. Sidney checked for traffic before pulling back onto the highway. I told you I d drive if you wanted to drink, Luke reminded Sidney. Sidney glanced in the rear view mirror. Josh seemed to be out like a light. He turned his attention back to Luke. I know you did, but I didn t wanna drink around you. Sidney s afternoon with Luke had been everything he d hoped for. Luke was funny and shy, and so fucking adorable that Sidney hadn t thought of Nash once all day. Well, except for just then but that didn t count. Taking a huge chance, Sidney reached over and covered Luke s hand. Thanks. I had a great time with you. SPRING Carol Lynne 68 Luke turned his hand over and threaded his fingers through Sidney s. He twisted around to look in the back seat. He s passed out.
