blood coating her hands, and bile rose in her throat.
I live next door, remember? she replied, her voice calm, as if trying to talk to a child. I heard
the shot and came right over.
Meghan would wonder about that later what kind of woman would run toward a gunshot rather
than away. However, she couldn t think about any of that right then.
You can t die, Luc Dodd. You can t leave us. I love you. Please. Please don t die.
She said that over and over again, her words blurring until someone pulled her off him. She
fought to go back, but Autumn whispered in her ear that she had to let the paramedics take care of him.
I ll take care of the children, she was saying once Meghan snapped out of it. Let me wash my
hands, and I ll take the kids. I ll call whoever you need me to. Go with your man in the ambulance
and talk to the police when you can. I ll help your babies.
Meghan stood up on shaky legs. I& I need to see them before I go.
Autumn shook her head. You don t have time, and you have blood on your shirt and pants. You ll
only scare them. I ll call your family. Promise.
Still numb, she nodded then followed the paramedic and got into the ambulance, answering
questions when she could. Luc was not allowed to die today. He d healed her in more ways than she
thought possible. If only she could heal him too.
Three hours later, she couldn t think. The waiting room seemed impossibly small, and no one had
told her anything. Autumn had come through, having called Meghan s parents from the number Meghan
had on her fridge. From there, her parents had called all of her siblings, as well as Luc s family.
Someone had brought her an extra set of clothes so she didn t have to see Luc s blood anymore.
Now everyone sat or paced in the small waiting room, eager for any news about Luc. Not
everyone, she thought. Alex was still in rehab, and Austin and Sierra had stayed home with their
children, as well as Sasha and Cliff. Autumn and Callie were with Sierra, helping keep everyone as
calm as possible.
She owed Autumn more than she d ever be able to repay.
Only she needed to know Luc was safe and alive before she could think too hard about that.
Baby, sit down, Maggie said as she patted the seat beside her. The doctors will come soon.
Meghan did as she was told and took Maggie s hand. Marie moved from where she sat next to
Meghan s father and sat on the other side of Meghan. Placed between the two matriarchs of the
families in the room, Meghan held on for dear life, praying and trying not to think too hard about what
could happen.
Are the police done questioning you? Decker asked, his voice deep, solemn.
Meghan blinked then nodded, grateful to speak about anything other than her fear for Luc. Yes.
Richard dropped the gun before he fled, so they ll have that evidence, too. They said they d find me
once they caught him.
Miranda leaned into her husband, and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. I m glad Austin
and everyone are at his house with the children.
Meghan let out a shaky breath. Me, too. The police don t think Richard would try to find& She
couldn t finish the words, not with her chest squeezing so tight.
The children are safe, Storm whispered as he came to kneel before her. He held onto her
knees, and she nodded. Austin won t let any harm come to those in his care. If you want, Wes and I
can head over there to help.
She blinked at her brother, her lower lip wobbling. She would not cry. Not until they knew Luc
was safe. She was only barely keeping it together as it was.
We can do that, Meghan, Wes said, his hands in his pockets. Give us something to do.
Tabby ll come with, right?
The Montgomery Inc. admin nodded, her long red hair in a messy bun on her head. She d come in
with Wes and Storm. She wasn t family, but she was part of the crew and Luc s friend. Of course.
We ll check in with the children and the others, then bring food if you need it. How about that?
Meghan just nodded, her throat tight. Her family ended up in this goddamn waiting room too
many times. In the past two years, they had bled, been through treatments, and taken years off her life.
This had to be the last one. She didn t know if she could handle it again.
As long as Luc was all right though, she knew she d find the will to handle anything.
Another thirty minutes passed after the trio left, and Meghan found herself sitting by each family
member, Luc s family, and even Jake. Jake just held her, knowing she needed it. He didn t give her a
pitying look, though, only whispered she could do this, she could do anything.
Luc s sisters sat together, their hands clasped as they whispered in prayer. Tessa wouldn t look at
her, but Meghan couldn t find the energy to care. She already blamed herself as it was. She didn t
need Tessa to do it as well. Yes, Richard had pulled the trigger, but Luc had been the one to step in
front of her, taking the bullet meant for her.
Dodd family? An older man in scrubs came through the door, and every single person stood up.
The man s eyes widened at the sight of so many people many of them large, bearded, and inked in
one spot.
Meghan couldn t speak. And as she wasn t married to Luc, Maggie and Marcus had to be the
ones to do so. The law didn t care about love and promise, only paperwork and blood ties.
That s us, Marcus answered, his voice firm, deep, so much like Luc s that Meghan wanted to
cry. He looked over his shoulder at everyone and held out a hand. Meghan gripped it like a lifeline,
coming to his side while Maggie stood on the other. All of us.
The doctor nodded. Luc is stable and out of surgery.
He continued on, explaining something about a punctured lung and other injuries that hadn t been
as severe, but Meghan couldn t hear it all. She blinked, her vision blurring. Her ears hummed, a loud
buzzing sound growing with each breath. Her knees shook, and suddenly she was in Griffin s arms,
his hand on her face.
Meghan? Griffin asked, his hand cupping her cheek. Meghan? Did you hear? He s okay. He s
going to be fine. A hundred percent after he recuperates. Meghan?
She tried to speak, but everything she d been holding in threatened to burst.
Vaguely she heard the doctor come near her and check her pulse. Has she eaten? he asked.
Her family answered for her, and she struggled for breath. Damn it. She d passed out, bringing
the focus to herself rather than on Luc like it should have been. She waved everyone off and tried to
stand. Griffin pulled her up to her feet, worry etched on his face. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
